“AVIATION” EXHIBIT OPENS JANUARY 9TH

The Westchester/Playa Historical Society is proud to announce the opening of its first themed exhibition, AVIATION, at the WPHS Discovery Center, located at 6207 W. 87^th Street in Westchester. The exhibit will be open to the public January 9^th through March 6^th every Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or by appointment. The genesis of the word “aviation” is the Latin term “avis,” meaning bird, a creature that travels through air. The exhibit embraces Westchester’s 110-year history of its travel through air, from the first air show in 1912 held in the, then, rural outskirts of the city of Los Angeles at Mines Field, now the eastern edge of the footprint of LAX.

The exhibit, which has been generously sponsored by our local IHOP & J. Anthony Kouba,  will highlight the stars of aviation, who brought their genius to the expansion of aviation to achievements way beyond initial expectations for air travel and air defense. The exhibit focuses on the historical significance and influence of the Aviation Industry  in the birth and development of our community. It features the air races of 1928, 1933 & 1936, the mooring of the Graff Zeppelin in 1929, the SST Concorde visit in 1974 and the arrival of the space shuttle Endeavor, in Route to the California Science Museum.

Featured among the heroes of the aviation industry will be Will Rogers, Wily Post, Bessie Coleman, as well as an autographed photo of Howard Hughes. Displays will include art deco aviation graphics, model airplanes, vintage uniforms, with videos of aviation pioneers. At its Design and Build workshop area, interactive projects for visitors will include model “bolsa wood” airplanes and a mural painting, for visitors of all ages can express their creativity, through artistic collaboration, celebrating our community’s heritage tied to aviation
